Hey everyone, Simon here with Top TennisTraining and in this video I want to show you three ways toinstantly improve your tennis.
Now each one of these tips can be donein a matter of minutes and you'll instantly seea difference in the quality of your hitting and also how you feelon the tennis court.
So the first tip is to really track the ballproperly at all times when you're either in a rallyor in a point.
Now how often do we hear coachesor players telling themselves to watch the ball properly? But what does it actually mean? Now most players would saythat when you watch the ball it should be that you're watching the ball bounceand rise up to your strings and try to see the ball hitting the stringswhich is one part of that tracking of the ball but it's not the entire partnow if i watch the ball up to the point of contact and then i see the ballcoming off my strings and i relax and i stop tracking thatball when my opponent hits the shot if my eyes are not focused on thatcontact point and on the ball traveling towards me andi pick up the ball as it's passing the net or even bouncingon my side of the court and then suddenly i switch back on againi'm now reacting late to that ball i won't be in the right position andalso it makes tracking the ball much harder because i'm switching on andoff between watching the ball and then relaxingwatching the ball then relaxing now what we want to do is be reallytracking that ball at all times in that rally situation so as your opponent makes contact you'rezoned in on that ball of course you're going to see the playerof course you're going to see their racket hitting that shot but your focusyour point of focus is that ball and as soon as it comes offthe strings if you're really zoned in on tracking that ball you'llquickly pick up if the ball's coming to your forehand sideif it's coming to your backhand side if it's coming deep or if it's coming short so you'll be able to react much quickerand you'll be on the ball much much faster if you're reallytracking that ball well now actually seeing that contact pointis almost impossible because of the speedof the contact point unless you're hitting the ball really really softin which case you'll be able to see that contact point but if you're hitting theball with any speed that point of contact will just be ablur but what you can do really well is see the ball bounce see the ball riseup see the ball come on to your strings so your eyes are still tracking the ballright until that blur off the contact pointand then you'll see the ball come off your strings so you might not see theactual contact point because it happens so quickbut you'll see the ball rising up to your strings and then coming off thestrings of course in between tracking the balli'll still see where the opponent's standingi'll still see what kind of shot they're hitting if they're going for more spinbut all of this is a byproduct of me watching that ballit's impossible for me to track the ball onto my opponent's stringsand not see where they're standing on the court now before we get into tipnumber two i just want to between these two strokesso strike number one stroke two stroke one again stroke two so in stroke onei'm doing what most players do and that's holding their breath when they'reswinging the racket so they'll get into that back positionthey squeeze up they hold the breath in they're tenseduring that contact point they're tense all the way through the finishand then after they make contact when the ball has already left their stringsand it won't help them they actually start to then exhaleat the end of the swing and this is often where you hear the gruntersdo their grunt so they're hitting the shot and then they gruntnow this will help you to actually get the rhythm of that breathing soinhale and exhale so it's better than holding your breathcompletely but it's not the ideal way to actually play tennisnow if we look at someone like federer who is i would say the godof tracking the ball and also how he actually breathes on the courtyou'll never see a picture of federer like thiswith his face puffed up because he's holding his breathnow if we look at other players like nadal djokovic a lot of them you'll seeimages where their faces are puffed up at thepoint of contact because they're holding their breathnow what happens when you hold the breath so if i'm in that positionand i hold my breath now and i swing as fast as i can at the point of contactand during that strike zone i'm tense because my body is holding inthat breath now if i exhale prior to that contactpoint at a point of contact i'm actuallyrelaxed i'm loose and this is exactly what we wantto do when we're on the tennis court so by me getting into that back positionhaving that inhale and then starting the exhale prior tothe actual contact point i'm relaxing through that contact pointi'm also allowing my body to swing in thatrelaxed way my muscles are relaxed everything isrelaxed in my body if i exhale during that contact pointnow one of the main reasons players are tight is because of holding their breaththey'll get into the power position and they hold their breath everything'sstiff but as soon as i start that exhale i feel completely relaxed i feel looseduring that strike zone and this doesn't matter which stroke itis for if i'm a one-handed backhand player i can exhaleif i'm a two-hander if i'm hitting a slice backhanddo you want to feel like you're exhaling through the point of contactand this will really help you see a massive difference in your gamewith just that quick adjustment of when you start your exhaleso ideally you want to be starting it just as the ball has bouncedand is rising up towards your racket of course you'll have to adapt depending onsometimes more spin less spin more power less poweretc but in general as the ball has bounced and is rising upto your contact point you're now starting thatexhale another way to actually feel this really easilyis to inhale on the preparation and exhaleon the forward phase of the swing so if it's my back and it would beinhale so inhale exhale inhale exhaleand this will help you to really feel that inhale and that exhaleso next time you play focus the first five or ten minuteson tracking the ball once you feel like you're really tracking that ball wellthen turn your attention to actually breathing through thatstrike zone so inhale exhale and the more you practice thisthe better you'll get at it and you'll start to feel that relaxation through that strike zone if you canapply just tip one and tip two you'll already see a massive differencewhen you're playing the game and tip number three is to increase yourmargins when you're playing now this means in a rally situation in apoint situation instead of going low over the netinstead of hitting the ball extremely flat and instead of hittingthe lines or trying to hit the lines which you might hit a few great winnersthat way but you also make a lot of unforced errorsand you won't be able to construct points in that manner so the opposite ofthat is now lifting the ball over the net hittingwith good amounts of topspin and aiming for big targets now when youthink about the tennis court the first obstacle that we have to clearis of course the net but how often do you actually hit theball into the net how often do you go for a more powerful shotand end up hitting the net this is simply because you're not lifting thatball you want to almost take the net out ofplay and the easiest way to do this is simply lift that ballgive yourself more of an arc so that would be the first stepin creating more margin so taking the net out of playby lifting the ball over the net now in order for us to lift the ball we canlift it by opening the strings but that will be more for defensive shotthis is more of a dink shot or we can increase it by going from lowto high and this will also increase your topspin levelsso by swinging from low to high on both your backhand and your forehandground strokes this will help you to clear the net but also produce that topspin to then get the ball to dip before thelines because obstacle one is of course a net but an obstacle twois getting it to dip before the lines and this is possiblewith that top spin now if we think about the ball as aclock so we have 12 o'clock on the top six o'clock on the bottom when we wantto produce more top spin and when we want to really clear thatnet with a higher loop the easiest way and the simplest way foryou to do this instantly is to make sure that your rack ahead isdropping completely below that ball level so if my contact pointis here my racket should be here if my contact point is here my racketshould be here and from that position i'm now focusinginstead of going forward with my racket i'm focusing more on goingupwards with my rack ahead so i'm hitting the ball from that six o'clockposition to 12 o'clock so it's going from belowthe ball to above the ball so that brushing effect will help me toproduce that top spin and also that lift which is so vital intaking that net out of play now in terms of your targets whereshould you be aiming to increase your percentage now ingeneral you want to be hitting cross court by hitting cross court i'mgoing over the lowest part of the net by hitting cross court i'm also goinginto the most amount of space so i have the most amount of court tohead into and if i hit the ball slightly latethe ball still goes into the middle of the court so it's not outnow if i go down the line i'm heading over the higher part of the netif i mistime it and hit the ball slightly late the ball is going to gointo the tram lines so the ball is out of play it's alsoimportant to remember where you have to recoverbefore your next shot now when i go cross-court my recovery zone is muchless than when i go down the line so that'sanother vital reason to hit the ball cross-court in generalso to build your points with those cross-court exchanges so aquick recap tip number one is to track the ball atall times when you're in a rally or you're in a pointthis means tracking the ball from the time your opponent hits the shotto the time it passes the net bounces on your siderises up to your contact point and then the blur off the contact pointthen the ball coming off your strings and back to your opponenttip number two is to exhale through that contact pointso inhaling in the preparation phase and exhaling through that point ofcontact and tip number three is increasing your margins so this meanstaking the net out of play and taking the lines out of play makingsure you hit with a good margin over the netmaking sure you hit with good levels
